Relativism: Navigating Reality with an Unreliable GPS
Relativism, Relativity, Reality and Absolutes
“It’s all Relative…. to what?”
In 1915 Albert Einstein first published his field equations (EFE, Einstein Field Equations), which detail his general theory of relativity.
Einstein recognized the dangers of only providing superficial information to folks, so he attempted to share his insights with others. He writes in the introduction to, The Universe and Dr. Einstein:
“Anyone who has ever tried to present a rather abstract scientific subject in a popular manner knows the great difficulties of such an attempt. Either he succeeds in being intelligible by concealing the core of the problem and by offering to the reader only superficial aspects or vague illusion, thus deceiving the reader by arousing in him the deceptive illusion of comprehension;
or else he gives an expert account of the problem, but in such a fashion that the untrained reader is unable to follow the exposition and becomes discouraged from reading any further. (What would Einstein say about this in 2013!)
If these two categories were omitted from today’s popular scientific literature, surprisingly little remains. But the little that is left is very valuable indeed. It is of great importance that the general public be given an opportunity to experience—consciously and intelligently—– the efforts and results of scientific research. It is not sufficient that each result be taken up, elaborated, and applied by a few specialists in the field. Restricting the body of knowledge to a small group deadens the philosophic spirit of a people and leads to spiritual poverty.”
In our time Einstein’s fears have been realized. A steady diet of superficiality in literature and entertainment has left many minds empty and ill-prepared to recognize the truths of our currently malfunctioning GPS systems.
Einstein’s theories on relativity were conveniently hijacked to become relativism. Moral Relativism continues to be the prevailing thought mode of most Americans today. Highlighting again, the dangers of hijacking of terms, and letting humanists run with scissors in the dictionaries, the classrooms, the media, and the civil government.
As a result of Darwin, Marx, Wellhausen, Dewey, and other progressives, by the early 1920’s the belief took hold in the masses that there were no absolutes: of good or evil, time and space, of foundational knowledge, or of transcendent values.
Einstein’s physics theories of relativity became embraced as moral relativism.
Replacing the Absolutes of God at the center, with relativism’s “man at the center” the public relations theme became “it’s all relative …to me.” The common man came to spout his version of Marx, Freud and yes, even Einstein’s physics theory, as if there were no moral code, no fixed positions, and no personal responsibilities. The course was set for moral anarchy.
(Recalculating…. finding new satellite coordinates)
For a culture to survive it must continue to successfully transmit its values, its absolutes, its ethics, and its moorings. It must have a point of reference; At least three points of reference if your global positioning system (GPS) is going to work; four reference points if your satellites have no atomic clocks.
For a GPS to get you where you want to go, you must, at minimum, provide your location, your destination, and you must have an up to date map– an ethics system to transmit you “there.”
For a culture to maintain sanity there must exist a moral code, a set of values, or a civil law, to ensure the continuation of its people. There are defined four Ethical systems to which cultures can adhere in attempts to transmit a guidance system to current and future generations.
The Mindsight crew would highly recommend the first one: Biblical morality. Pretty straightforward. The manual has been around for thousands of years, and has successfully navigated the Jewish people, the culture that has transmitted its values inter-generationally, for nearly 4,000 years.
You need not update the manual, just apply it. In fact there are highly enforced penalties for update attempts. Absolutes are provided. Biblical morality comes with its own ongoing Tutorial Program; Available in all languages, see Manufacturer for details.
The basis of civil law is found in Exodus 20:1-17 or a more simplified version in Matthew 22:38. It is copyrighted and comes with a lifetime guarantee, plus added bonus features for application: blessings on you, your household, your land, and your nation. Deuteronomy 11, 28 and throughout the manual. Plenty of reviews available.
For those who prefer progress to destinations unknown, secular circles have developed alternative ethical systems by which they attempt to govern themselves.
The elite system of these compromises goes by the name of “consensus morality.” In this system, the elite minds agree to a set of by-laws by which to govern them. The Magna Carta, The Constitution, etc. are such forms of this mutually agreed upon rule of law.
The ruling elite records these laws, and then calls themselves a “government of the law.” The elite define what will be legal and illegal, and by this, they establish what will be deemed moral or acceptable in their society.
This type of consensus morality works if most folks are virtuous and obedient. But, when the majority becomes rebellious, immoral, unprincipled, and unstable, then the satellites triangulating the system become out of sync. The disparity increases, and the consensus begins to break down.
This type of rule by consensus is called “democracy”. We note that a pure democracy, and its associated laws of consensus, is not adequate to control a society that lacks an internal Tutor, as in Biblical morality. Democracies only last as long as the majority of the people are virtuous, guided by an inner moral compass, coordinated by the One Who grants Liberty to men.
When democracies, or democratic republics sink, they may slide to the next form, labeled as pragmatism. “Under pragmatism, the citizens of a progressively weak nation (progressives, tend to make the nation progressively weak) shift their focus more and more to doing what appears practical, advantageous, or personally profitable for their own survival. It’s all about looking out for “number one.”
This dissecting of the nation describes the progressive trend of multi-culturalism, diversity training, affirmative action, revenge on the white man, thematic civics, revisionist history, common core, nationalized education, blame, and divide strategies that are inBloom today alongside the fourth form of “morality.”
The fourth form, which is invading with the virility of a malignant cancer, is called “hedonism.”
Hedonism is defined as: devotion to, or the pursuit of pleasure; self-indulgence. It is the ethical doctrine that the seeking of pleasure is the primary good.
Immediate gratification becomes the norm; the loins, the stomachs, and entertainment rule the culture. Society degrades to the level in which adultery, sodomy, and bestiality are deemed “alternative lifestyles” or merely expressions of self-realization.
A society in hedonism is in its final stage of existence, before the terminal stage of anarchy ensues.
Anarchy lasts only a blip on the screen. The depravity, death, and destruction that denote anarchy, eliminate all aspects of morality, or even moral relativism. There is nothing left to transmit, and no one left to transmit it to. No more recalculating, no more map updates, the warranty is worthless, as the destination has been pre- assigned…. for eternity.
We see that persons, who pretend at intelligence, by applying Einstein’s theory to social engineering, claiming “Its all relative”, lack the virtue, the wisdom, and the absolutes to self-govern. And so they will not.
God’s laws are not affected by man’s attempts to deny His existence or His absolutes. God’s laws work regardless of man’s adherence to, acknowledgement of, or respect for Him or His absolutes.
Today we are witnessing the results of moral relativism promoted for decades through our public education system.
“The battle for mankind’s future must be waged and won in the public school classroom. The classroom must and will become an arena of conflict between the old and the new, the rotting corpse of Christianity and the new faith of humanism.” John Dunphy, The Humanist magazine, January-February 1983
The promotion of the religion of Humanism continues with the Common Core Standards whose philosophical dominance is clearly those of: statism, moral relativism, and progressivism.
Einstein, an honest Jewish theist, with a deep respect for God and the absolutes God established, was grieved that his physics theory of relativity was maligned into a moral weapon of mass destruction far greater than that of his other theories.
The laws of nature and of nature’s God do have a way of proving themselves.
Unless individuals take personal responsibility for installing the Absolute maps into their own ethical systems and that of their heirs, our culture will certainly continue along the trajectory that leads to a working out of another of Einstein’s formulas: Energy latent within matter is equal to the mass of that matter multiplied by the speed of light squared. Poof! ….so much for “progress.”
God’s Absolutes will confirm His Absolute faithfulness to His choice in “ethics.”
Time to recalculate the GPS, or pitch the thing and return to The Map.
